What's New for the 2017 Hyundai Tucson?

Still new into its third generation, the Hyundai Tucson nevertheless makes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay–which enable you to control the stereo head unit with your smartphone–available for the first time. Although that is the only substantial change on the vehicle, the Tucson still remains a top-level choice in the compact crossover SUV market—thanks to its quiet interior, healthy list of amenities, and high safety ratings. The 2017 Tucson is available in seven trims: SE, SE Plus, Eco, Value Edition, Sport, Night, and Limited.

With seating for up to five people, the latest Tucson offers 133.2 cubic feet in overall interior space. Depending on what trim you go with, Hyundai provides power adjustability, power lumbar support, and heating capability for the front-row seating. (Notably, the SE Plus and Limited are the only trims with leather-appointed seats.) The standard engine on the crossover is a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) with 164 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. The Eco and Value Edition, however, are fitted with a smaller, 1.6-liter turbocharged I4, which provides 175 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. The Tucson engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Although the standard layout is front-engine front-wheel-drive, you can opt for an all-wheel drivetrain for improved traction. For comfort and convenience, the 2017 Tucson gets steering wheel-mounted controls, cruise control, six-speaker audio that integrates AM/FM radio and a single-disc CD player with MP3 playback capability, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, a 5-inch color touchscreen, a rearview camera, remote keyless entry, and SiriusXM satellite radio compatibility. Upgrading in trim increases the chance of getting more advanced features, which include dual-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic tilt-and-slide moonroof, an Infiniti Premium Audio system, the aforementioned Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and 8-inch color touchscreen navigation. The top-tier Limited is the only trim with a garage-door opener, auto-dimming ability on the rearview mirror, and Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system. Standard safety features include four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, a driver’s blind spot mirror, electronic vehicle stability control, traction control, and eight airbags. Advanced or upper-level safety features include blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, and rear parking sensors. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS, declared the 2017 Hyundai Tucson a “Top Safety Pick”—thanks to scoring the highest possible rating (“Good”) in all of the organization’s crashworthiness tests, the highest possible rating (“Superior”) in its front crash prevention test, and garnering an “Acceptable” rating in effectiveness of its headlight illumination.
